PSALM COMMENTARY

PSALM Seventy-two

THEME — The Glory and Universality of the Reign of the Messiah

In Psalm 72, the people pray for the king Solomon. Solomon wrote this Psalm and it reflects the god–given wisdom of the Son of David, the King of Israel. Solomon designs a prayer to be sung, a prayer containing five sections. Each section reflects a particular aspect of a just ruler and his righteous reign.

    Outline
  1. Verses 1-4: prayers for the nature of his administration.
  2. Verses 5-7: prayers for his spiritual influence.
  3. Verses 8-11: prayers for his worldwide dominion.
  4. Verses 12-15: prayers for his domestic policies.
  5. Verses 16-17 prayers for the prosperity of the Land.

The Psalm is obviously to be fulfilled in christ, of whom Solomon is a type, the Messianic Son of David and King of the Jews and the church. These very blessings and beauties will mark His rule over, first, the church and then, the world.

(adapted from M. F. Ross)

Isaiah 9:6-7
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty god, The everlasting father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his govertnment and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Lord of hosts will perform this.
Acts 2:29-30a
(Peter, on the the Day of Pentecost, preaches concerning David the King and the greater David, jesus the christ.) Therefore being a prophet and knowing that god had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of christ.
I Corinthians 15:25
For he must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet. (Psalm 110)
